What is hormone optimization?
Hormone optimization at BioRestore is more than testosterone replacement. Our clinicians look for the root cause of your low testosterone. Is testosterone therapy safe?
The TRAVERSE trial, the largest placebo-controlled randomized study of testosterone therapy to date, found that testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) does not significantly increase the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events in men with low testosterone. Large studies have also found no significant increase in prostate cancer or worsening urinary symptoms. Based on these findings, the FDA has since removed earlier cardiovascular warnings from testosterone labels. TRAVERSE also found slightly higher rates of atrial fibrillation, acute kidney injury and pulmonary embolism in men taking testosterone, and the FDA added a warning about increased blood pressure to testosterone labels.
A 2025 position statement from the European Expert Panel for Testosterone Research concludes that TRT is safe from a cardiovascular standpoint when it is prescribed to appropriately selected patients and monitored regularly, with particular attention to hematocrit.
